something old, something new

i like to look back at my old pictures and think about what i might do different. i can tell what pictures were taken at the beginning of my school career and although i may not be better but by a little, i can tell i've improved. for instance, here are some photos from the 4th of july in 2005.

i met ray mabus, former governor of mississippi and a former foreign ambassador to saudi arabia. he was campaigning for Obama. then somehow, Clinton decided to stop by with his dear friend Ashley Judd in boring old Abilene. Here are the pictures that resulted.

our new assignment for art is called "seeing things." we are required to take different angles of pictures and look at an object that may have a double meaning (such as a wad of chewed gum= gum ball).
i made a pinhole camera and took a few pictures.

our new assignment for art photography is to take really abstract pictures that may perhaps resemble something else completely or be graphically metaphorical. i wish i knew more about what it is exactly he is looking for. i guess i kind of know but i'm still not entirely sure.

i think he wants something like these, angular and off-beat and slightly cracked-out.

let's hope i can do this!

the art of criticism or the criticism of art?

i finally finished my art photography portrait project. however, i got some pretty severe criticisms from my professor.
i thought my pictures for art were decent and got them printed and mounted in the tom of time only to be discredited for technical problems-- i got the wrong matt size, i neglected to remove the white trim from my picture edges, etc. --and lack of creativity. lack of creativity???? ME? i have never lacked the ability for creativity. my pictures were not of any great symbolic consequence, true, but i DID put much care into the production of them. my professor wounded me to my core with his criticisms and then proceeded to sarcasticly thump the bloody gash. he is a boob. do you think they have any value?

other than being depressed about art class photos, i had an excellent shoot at the zoo for a photo feature in wednesday's issue of The Optimist. i would have liked to have more photo caption information but the features editor had a certain design in mind so a lot of really interesting information was left out for reasons unknown to myself. i had loads of great quotes and facts that would have made the spread so much more informative. i suppose i should just be thankful for having a good shoot. for a minute, i was getting worried i had lost my touch altogether.

much ado about nothing

i went to the windfarm this week that is about 10 miles outside Abilene to take a few pictures for the Optimist. it was, however, extremely disconcerting as i took horrible pictures and it was miserably cold the day we went. for some reason, i had difficulty taking pictures that were worth anything to look at and was so depressed on the way back to school i could have cried. here is my best shot from those pictures.

my art photography is getting much better. i think i have chosen a theme so my portraits are more cohesive visually. what i'm going to do is take all of my portraits of people upside down but when you view them they will be right side up. this way i can get cool pictures of people with cooky hair or a funny expression. now if i could just figure out how to have extremely amazing lighting...

black, white and red all over

we're doing portraits in art photography right now. i don't really have a lot of experience doing this type of work. but i've found i enjoy shooting in black and white rather than color when it comes to art because i can separate it my mind more easily. i can disappear behind my lens and become my camera, existing only to take a picture of my subject. black and white also shows more emotion seemingly.
